Otti and Meinolf Schömehl found the winery, since the 1990’s the family company is managed by the oenologists Hartmut Hahn and Elke Schömehl-Hahn.
Hartmut is responsible for the cultivation in the vineyards and the winemaking. He loves working with the different grape varieties and what our terroir brought up.
Elke fosters the contact to our customers and welcomes you in our winery. Together they are the heart of our winery.
Meinolf Schömehl still helps as the senior - he especially loves driving his Holder tractor und cares about our young vines.
Anna, Elke’s and Hartmut’s daughter, studies Enology in Geisenheim, at the same time she supports the family winery in her leisure time and comes up with new ideas.
The mixture of traditional and modern ideas leads to our concept and quality.
Winery & vineyard sites
Our winery is located at the lower Nahe in the village Dorsheim. The village is in a nice valley close to the river Nahe, which gives the name for our wine region. All together we run 15 hectars of vinyards with different grape varieties. Typically for our region - and as it is our passion - our vinyards consist almost to the half of Riesling. The Riesling grapes are accompanied by Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Auxerrois, Scheurebe, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau. The red grapes varieties are Pinot noir, Frühburgunder, Dornfelder and Saint Laurent.
Dorsheimer Goldloch, Burgberg, Pittermännchen and Laubenheimer Karthäuser are our most precious vineyard sites – well known for their outstanding variety in soil and corresponding microclimate. In these sites only Riesling vines are grown.
It is our aim to work with the quality given by the surrounding nature and create characteristic and individual wines – according to the grapes and soils. The process already starts in winter when the vines are cut. To decrease the quantity and increase the quality, there are methods of cutting against high cluster, in early summer we reduce the foliage - and the cluster. Later on the methods of green harvest and selective manual harvest lead to excellent grapes.
While the white grapes are gently pressed, controlled and slowly fermented in chilled stainless tanks, the red wines are fermented on the mash - the traditional procedure. Then they are stored in Barrique barrels - where they can ripe nicely.
Besides that we produce sparkling wines according to the “méthode champenoise” – we produce a fruity and sparkling Cuvée Riesling and and a Cuvée Pinot.
